In Lieu of Flowers
Friday, June 28th my Mom turned 77. She is my BFF and I feel compelled to express that to her…while I can. That’s right, while we’re both still here in this world, together. What plants this stuff in my head is those funeral prayer cards – you know, the ones my husband brings home. “They’re starting to eat, at MY BRAIN!!” The person on the prayer card probably has no idea that those beautiful words were meant for them.
Anyway, after searching the Hallmark store, I finally found one – but it still didn’t exactly say what I wanted. It had wonderful words about us being true friends and…Mother Daughter stuff, though it was missing a few things. So, I decided to write some of my own words on the card:
I’ve always been so proud to say “That’s my Mom.” You continue to be an inspiration to me.
Your strength and devotion to all of us have meant everything. It taught us the value of patience.
Some may not understand your love for our father – your husband. And, why you stayed with him all these years. (our Dad was crazy – now he’s cool).
But I kinda do. Marriage is a tough job and you’ve shown me how to work at its ups and downs.
I don’t think you realize how much influence you’ve had in my life – as a Woman and as a Wife.
I feel so very blessed to have you as my Mom, and my Best Friend Forever.
I love you.
After mailing the card…my heart just kept pounding with some crazy voice inside saying “What if something happens and this doesn’t get to her in time. Maybe I should call her and tell her.” Then I thought, no Lynne – you finally mailed the damn card on time AND she’ll actually receive it before, her birthday. Didn’t want to spoil the moment, for neither one of us.
The best part…she received it ON her birthday!! We both laughed and cried over it. I’m soooo glad I did it. Now, I can’t wait to see her in August. Hope we both make it to August. Jeez, the thoughts in a Mortician’s Wife’s brain can be – exhausting.
“HAPPY BIRTHDAY MOM”
