Yes, You Can Have A Funeral in Your House.
This morning I was cleaning out our upstairs closet and came across an old business card. Funny, totally forgot I’d kept this stuff. Oooh the memories…
Morty and I moved to San Jose CA in 1993. We’d only been dating for 8 months so the funeral world, was still very new to me. He had a job waiting for him – I didn’t. Weeks went by, he figured he’d help me out and calls me – with a gig.
“I have a family that needs help with a…sorta – Funeral Party, at their house. The caterer bailed on them. You wanna do it?” Funeral Party? Done Weddings, Birthdays a …few stags, why not. “When is it?” “Tomorrow at 4pm.” Um, ‘What.?” Silence. “Everythings there, you just gotta set it up. Grab our neighbor, she’ll help.” Nina didn’t speak much English but, we both needed the money.
Nina and I followed the Instructions – Set up food in Kitchen, Bar in the Living Room and all flower deliveries were to go in the Dining room. Right when we finished setting up…the doorbell rang, Flower Delivery. And guests were arriving. Told Nina to put the flowers in the Dining Room and I’ll greet the guest. All the sudden a loud crash came from the dining room and Nina came busting through knocking down three people, and out the door – screaming down the street. The casket was in the Dining room – opened. Morty never told me our Center Piece…was the body. The family was very generous, and I was open for business. Nina became my partner and bought it from me four years later.
