TOP 5 SECRETS OF A FUNERAL DIRECTOR
For some ‘crazy reason, people think Funeral Directors are scammers who push you into buying overpriced stuff! And, think they cut corners to boost their already fat profit margins? Do you think that they are heartless salespeople? Let’s be honest, funeral directors often get a bad rap. Though your opinion changes once you actually work with a professional to plan a loved one’s funeral. People will realize that most funeral directors are friendly, compassionate people with a ‘goofy sense of humor, and will feel they’re genuinely there to help you.
- Funeral Directors Care About You.
Even though funeral directors are around death every day, they’re still sensitive when families have suffered a loss. Especially the death of children or deaths that occurred to a violent crime. After all, they are human. Most Funeral directors have often lost people they loved too, so they are able to empathize with how you are feeling. They will tuck their own emotions away, sort of like – doctors and nurses. They hold back their tears when you speak about your loss, that is your time and they are there to help you get through it, as best a possible.
Something you may not know is funeral homes will take care of homeless people or elderly people with no family without receiving any payment. Yes – free!
2. Funeral Directors Aren’t Creepy Lookin’
They get soooo stereotyped. We’re all guilty, at one time or another. We visualize funeral directors as creepy old men who walk like Frankenstein in oversized black suits. They’re not. Well, maybe there’s some out there lurking around. Realistically, you’ll find young men and women are becoming funeral directors and changing the perception of these special people.
Years ago, when you told a person that you were a funeral director, they’d freak out after shaking hands, like it was bad luck. Or, “OMG you touch DEAD BODIES??” Especially if you’re a Female Funeral Director. Thank God, women are getting into this profession. I mean like, “Makeup & Hair Please!” And I’m thrilled to hear they people really want to talk to you now and open up about their experience with loss.
3. It’s NOT a Glamourous Job
Why people think being a funeral director is another 9-to-5 job. You and your family – will be on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Running out during Christmas dinner, your child’s birthday party, little Billy’s soccer game and in the middle of a romantic rendezvous! Why? Because he or she just received a call from a family that needs them. The reality is that other people’s needs are higher than yours. These guys sacrifice their needs to serve others. It a selfless job that not everyone can do. Like my husband says “Being in this business you’re not the everyday kind of Joe. It’s a calling. If ya think you’re gonna make tons of money, don’t become a funeral director!”
- You’re not going to get a Fat Paycheck.
Everyone thinks that Morticians and Funeral Directors make so much money and Funeral homes never have to worry about going out of business. FALSE. Let’s talk Cremation. This type of service is totally taking over. The magic that funeral directors perform like the embalming, make up, restorative, coordinating the special details – are on the decline. There’s less demand for that personal touch oppose to having someone push a crematory button. Also, your new FD’s need to pay your dues! Meaning, you can’t just waltz into a Funeral Home and think you’re gonna get paid what a seasoned FD’ is getting paid. Get ready to roll up your sleeves and not SLEEP for a few years.
- We love it when you say; “Thank You!”
Funeral directors are on call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and work very long hours. But it’s all worth it when they get a nice card from a family expressing their gratitude or even posting it on the Funeral Homes facebook and website for helping them get through a tough time.” Funeral Directors are our special Angels who show up at our most vulnerable moment in life and help us make sense of it all. Thank you and hugs mean the world to them.
